The Results

I lost. 10 votes.
Yeah, that was blunt, but it's best to have it out in the open.
I know a lot of people worked very hard to help me with this campaign, and I can't thank them enough for campaigning for me.
I also want to thank Andrew Lee. He's a good guy, and I really hope he can pull this next year off. I want this class to succeed, despite what 10 people may think.
I'm worried about this class. I am. People are voting for all the wrong reasons. Now, this isn't a snub to Andrew Lee in any way, and no one should interpret it that way. In any other year, I would have gladly supported a Lee campaign. He's a hard worker, and very enthusiastic. He's a fun guy, and I wish him the best.
Our class apparently doesn't trust experience. Instead, they think a sense of "fairness" is somehow inherent. I'm not quite sure what it means. Placing an untested candidate in a position of power is incredibly risky, and I can only hope it works out for the best next year.
I'm a bit angry right now, so I'd like to come back and post something tomorrow night when I'm in a better headspace.
If you'd like to leave a comment on how I can win next year, please do.

I don't feel I can give you any hints, as I'm fairly confident you won't take them.

Why Vote For Me?

Rather than attempt to relay the specifics of my runoff campaigning today, I'd rather talk about why you should vote for me. I have some pretty great qualities, including:
- Experience. I've been on the Inner Council for a year, and I'm currently serving as your Class President (hopefully you knew that). I'm the only candidate with experience leading a class (a high school class, in fact). As a matter of fact, I've served alongside Andrew on the Inner Council. Now, some people say that Inner Council experience prepares you for the ASB. Let me tell you, this is a whole different ball game.
- Stability. No, this is not a pun. As a member of the ASB, I know how they operate, and can start planning great things for this class immediately. However, the transition will be less secure with a new President in power (much like the admittedly unsecure transition at the beginning of this year). Even with all the coaching and training in the world, a new President cannot fully acclimate to the ways of the Student Body until some time into the year. I, however, will be able to get working right off the bat.
- History of Successes. We had some pretty fun activities this year, right? We got that superfly Harry Potter movie day (which we wish to continue in the future), that crazy-cool PowerStation night (which was admittedly less-than-well-timed, but was still quite fun), and that mondo-awesome Talent Show (a first-time activity this year, and we got freakin' 2nd place)! We've got tons of money in the bank, some pretty stong Spirit Points, a website (finally), and a fantastic Inner Council. Want more of this? Vote for me. Don't want it? Don't vote for me.
- Endorsements. This one's a bit more contentious. However, my campaign has been endorsed by both this year's ASB and former Class President (and Presidential Candidate) Ariel Improta. As such, it would stand to reason that supporters of Ariel's campaign would, if they respected Ariel's opinion, support this campaign. These people know what it takes to lead a class, and have unanimously agreed that I'm the best choice for ours. Just something to ponder.
- Decisiveness. I'm not afraid to make tough decisions. Sometimes they backfire (like my choice not to write a speech, more on that later). But, more often than not, they've benefited our class. Like our Inner Council this year: it's a substantial improvement on last year's IC, but it couldn't get that way without tough and unique choices about who would best serve our class (including my good pal Andrew Lee, who's excellent on Newsletter).
- Respect. I respect you and your opinions. I set up this blog so I could communicate directly with my constituents (and others). I didn't write a speech because I thought that having prepared statements would seem phony. For the same reason, I tried to avoid basing my campaign around a "gimmick", like many other campaigns. While some candidates for ASB positions used such tactics to appeal to seventh-graders and their ilk, I knew that you were smart enough to be able to base your vote on real ideas. If you want to prove me wrong about your intelligence, vote for someone else with their campaigns based around an unnecessary gimmick.

Voting is tomorrow, in front of Mrs. Perry's room. The absolute worst thing you can do is abstain. That's something Andrew and I can both agree on. And don't forget to dress up for Jock/Preppy Spirit Day (yeah, I'm not sure what it means either).

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: The best hint I can provide for you is to vote for me tomorrow. You'll help yourself and your class.

Election Celebration - Addendum

In all my focus on the runoff yesterday, I forgot to congratulate next year's '09 cabinet. However, this is very important for everybody in our class, so...
Congratulations to:
- Vice President Mary Han (formerly Freshman Secretary)
- Secretary Jenny Ham (first-time ASB Member)
- Treasurer Tony Park (formerly Seventh Grade President)
I'd also like to thank the class candidates who didn't make it this year. Just the knowledge that you ran for office to help your class speaks volumes about your integrity and courage. Hopefully you'll try out for the Inner Council for next year (if I have anything to say about it, anyways).
Additional congratulations to:
- Presidential Candidate Ariel Improta (formerly Eighth Grade President)
- Vice Presidential Candidate Jonathan Yang (no prior ASB experience)
- Secretarial Candidate Cindy Lu (formerly Freshman Treasurer)
- Treasurial Candidate Wendy Ku (no prior ASB experience)
All the candidates ran great campaigns, and hopefully everybody can throw their support to the one race left for our class. Voting is on Tuesday, everybody!

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: The famous quote "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair" is actually a misquote. The real line, from Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem "Ozymandias", is "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:/Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!". The "upon" is really an "on". Iambic pentameter. Stuff like that. So your hint is not to misquote it.

Election Celebration

The title's a bit of a misnomer. It's certainly not a "celebration" for more than half of the candidates who aren't quite with the winning. But either way, the "Election Celebration" was held at 3:30 in the gym, in front of the backdrop of volleyball practice and various balloon arches.
There were plenty of twists and turns in the various races (like ASB President and Veep), and more than a few frustrating moments ("They were UNOPPOSED! We know they won! Mooove on!"). I even got to deliver what some people felt was the biggest twist of the afternoon (Brian Lee's upset over Lauren Lee in the Class of 2010 Presidential campaign).
But I had steeled myself beforehand. I knew that no matter what happened in there, whether I won or lost, I would still come out with a result.
Turns out... Not so much.
Ariel ran an excellent campaign, and I agreed with many of her ideas for improving the class. Unfortunately, the votes didn't quite turn her way. I wish her the very best in all of her pursuits, and hope she applies for the Inner Council next year.
But my other opponent was Andrew Lee. "Andrewmon". Apparently, he ran away with the votes, and I barely received enough to take this thing into runoffs. Now, Andrew's a great guy. I've worked with him for a couple of years now, and I know he's always enthusiastic about what he's working on.
However, is he really the best candidate for the Presidency? Can he lead the Class of '09 with conviction, weathering the rough patches along with the good times? Is he firm enough to really be a leader?
I'm not implying he isn't, of course, I just need you, the voters, to ask yourself these questions and decide for yourselves. I may have come down on him a bit hard for using flash and gimmicks, but I don't think our class should be swept aside of the real issues because Candidate Such-and-Such's campaign is based on a better TV show that Candidate So-and-So's campaign. I've tried to talk directly to the class, through this blog, through my speeches, and through whatever other avenues I can find.
I care passionately about this class. The question is: Do you?

I'm tired of all this campaigning, all this innuendo about whether a candidate is competent or not. I wanted it to end, but today proved it wouldn't. So I'll come back on Monday, campaign off what's left of my butt that hasn't already been campaigned off, and hope you all vote for me on Tuesday. And by Wednesday, it'll all be over. I think.

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: Still coming down from your St. Patrick's Day festivities? Hopefully you don't have a hangover (technically called a veisalgia), since you shouldn't be drinking. And while there aren't any cures for hangovers known to be effective, here are some of the more colorful ones:
- Pickle juice
- An especially large pizza/sandwich
- A disgusting Scottish energy drink called "Irn-Bru"
- Charcoal
- Cabbage leaves
- Taking a shower and abruptly switching hot and cold water
- Canned asparagus
- DayQuil and/or NyQuil
- And, of course, more alcohol ("hair of the dog")

Voting Day

Well, my computer is acting rather funkful, and my shoulder hurts tremendously, so I'll cut to the chase before it shuts down on me and I lose another post.
Today was voting day, and the polls are officially closed, with the ballots being tallied as we... er, type. There was some confusion earlier today about the voting location (in front of Perry, not Song), whether you could vote at snack (you couldn't), and how long the polls were open after school (I was told they would be open until 3:30, but there were some differing opinions on that last bit). Fortunately, I was able to talk to our head of Internal Affairs, Derrick Wu, and get a special PA announcement for everybody. Don't say I don't fight for you.
Well, it's been fun, and I can't exactly change the results at this point, despite certain classmates' suggestions that I slip Byun or Fierro a $20 bill under the stack of ballots. All of the candidates for all positions were outstanding, and I really had to think about my choice for all but one of the races.
I do still have Presidential duties for this administration, so I'm reminding everybody that tomorrow is Saint Patrick's Day. Wear green if you support the Irish Catholics, orange if you support the Protestant Northern Irish, red if you don't want a Spirit Point, and either green or orange if you aren't sure which side you support.
See you after school tomorrow! Come out and support your various favorite candidates!

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: So it's tradition to dine on corned beef (and possibly cabbage) for St. Paddy's Day. But this particular year, Catholics have hit a snag in their traditional feast: You're not supposed to eat meat on Fridays during Lent. However, some bishops are granting dispensations to their diocese for the holiday. But apparently you're not supposed to do that either. So my hint is to enjoy your corned beef tonight. You might get in trouble if you try it tomorrow.

The Campaign - Day Ten

Hey! Guess what?
(You say: "What?")
Today is the day that campaigning ended! So if you want to hear me or any other candidates talk more about their various assets... well, just ask. I can't say no.
Today was also our super-swell class meeting, in which various delightful ASB seniors introduced the candidates and their speeches. I was the last to speak, and much of the energy and enthusiasm had been sucked out of the audience (save Karthik, who is always very excited, and isn't afraid to show it), as people were antsing to get to lunch aready.
It also didn't help that I essentially ad-libbed my speech. However, I felt that having something overly prepared would take away from the person-to-person, genuine feel I have established for much of my campaign. Something else I established for this campaign, the firm "no-gimmicks" law, was also tested, as I was visibly put-off by some of the hokier props/costumes/musical accompaniments other candidates in all four positions sprung on the audience.
People told me they enjoyed my speech, but I'm not so sure. I got an essentially lukewarm reception, and only my good buddy, senior Dane Ortega, was still laughing after the speech had ended.
Some of you were made a bit uneasy by my aggressive campaigning tactics I had used earlier in the race, so I took this opportunity to work a few shifts in the Student Store. It wasn't my week to work, but nobody else was doing it, so I figured I might as well. Come to think of it, it's a bit like my Presidency: I pick up the slack, do the duties other people couldn't perform.
Are you registered to vote? No? Too bad. The rosters have already gone out to the seniors for voting. Better luck next year!
Yes, it's that time again. Voting is on the morrow. Do you know who you're voting for in each of the positions (besides Class President, that should be a no-brainer)? Honestly, there are certain races for which I have yet to make up my mind, mostly in the ASB commisioner spectrum. But I should have it down pat by tomorrow.
Tomorrow is also a Spirit Day, so show up wearing red, white, and blue clothing and earn our class some Spirit Points! Or possibly Spirit Fingers! Or Jazz Hands! Something to that effect.
Make up your minds. Consider all the candidates. Vote with your mind, not with your gut. And I'll see you at the Election Celebration on Friday.

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: Hot on the heels of yesterday's Pi Day announcement comes a much more ominous holiday, especially for politicians. Yup, today was the Ides of March, famous for being the day of Julius Caesar's assassination. As a candidate running for political office, this is a rather portentous omen of doom. Will someone close to me turn on me? Et tu, Whitney High?

The Campaign - Day Nine

Alright, so this is it, more or less. I've given necklaces/lanyards/badges/thingies to essentially every one of you (come see me after the speech tomorrow if you still don't have one, they're pretty great). I've blogged about the campaign and other random items. I've tried to convince you to vote for me in every possible way, short of a dance routine.
So what now?
Tomorrow's a pretty danged big day. You'll be receiving Elections Newsletters in your homerooms, which have been lovingly prepared by Newsletteristas Tiffany Lin and Julia Meng, with some minor help in the stapling department from Jonathan Yang and myself. It also contains something very rare for a class newsletter: an ACTUAL SUBMISSION from a person in our class! Insanity!
It's also got candidate quips, some very nice cover artwork, and a calendar for much of the rest of the month. Read it, it's fun. I know sometimes people will just trash their newsletters, but it's worth it this time. Very well done.
Tomorrow is also the LAST EVER FOR REALS DAY to register to vote. Don't let any of the candidates running for ASB positions down. That would be a total drag, yo. And the Student Store doesn't sell Red Vines, so if you've got a jones, you'll need to hit up the registrars in the quad.
Most important (for me, anyway) is the Class Meeting at lunch tomorrow. I'll be giving an accent-free speech, as will all of your class cabinet candidates. And it's sort of mandatory, so I really recommend attending. Will I come in costume? Will Mary sing? Will Jonathan freak out and start attacking people?* Come to the meeting tomorrow and see!
Well, I've got campaign fatigue. Of course, at this point, you probably do too. So, I'll sign off... wait for it... NOW!

*Yeah, he probably won't do that. Jonathan, you know I think you're great and not prone to random outbursts of violence.

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: Did you know today was Pi Day? Yup, it happens every March 14 (3/14). I would have figured a school like Whitney would have a reasonably prominent Pi Day celebration, but since it just occurred to me on the way home, I guess it's not too popular a celebration hereabouts. To celebrate, I suggest you all have a delicious slice of pie after dinner. I'm having a chicken pot pie for dinner. Isn't pie/pi great?

The Campaign - Days Six, Seven, and Eight

Aaand we're back. Howdy folks! Will Stabile here, with another exciting campaign update! Exciting for me, anyway.
Well, the weekend was a blast. I, for one, went to a party on the Santa Monica Pier and enjoyed a tasty meal at Bubba Gump's Shrimp Co. By the way, and I'm not alone here, I really don't think that Forrest Gump is a movie that really lends itself to a theme restaurant.
But I'm not sure you care about my weekend carousing, so let's get down to business. As you probably saw, I have a whole new batch of necklaces/lanyards/badges/thingies for everybody, and I grossly overestimated the amount I would need. So, if anybody wants spares, look for me and the Trader Joe's sack I'll be carrying. They're shiny and laminated, and I even trimmed the pokey corners so you don't hurt anybody.
I'm also writing my speech for Wednesday, and I'm debating whether or not to deliver it in a fake Southern accent. On the one hand, it's been sort of a tenet of my campaign to shy away from gimmicks. On the other, well, it sounds pretty fun. So, this would be a perfect opportunity to leave comments! What do you think I should do?
There's an Inner Council meeting on the morrow, and your elections newsletter should be coming out soon. And remember, Wednesday is the VERY LAST POSSIBLE EVER DAY to register to vote. If you don't, there's no candy, and you can't vote. Actually, the second one is probably more important. So, register to vote! The registrars are back in the quad, so you don't have to search for them any more. You're welcome.
I have the list of registered people, so I'll know if you're lying. I also have the class roster, so, if you're lying, let's just say I know where you live.
On that ominous note, see ya!

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: In case you were wondering, there's a system of British nobility ranking known as peerage. So, if you ever need to know, the rankings are as follows, from least important to most important:
- Baron (called a Lord of Parliament in Scotland)
- Viscount
- Earl (also known as a Count)
- Marquess (the female equivalent is a Marchioness)
- Duke (there are also Royal Dukes, which are unrelated)
Of course, there are various Archdukes and Prince-Bishops and whatnot, but that's standard British peerage. Just in case you were wondering.

The Campaign - Day Five

Friends! Whitneyites! Countrymen! Lend me your eyes.
Yes, it's yet another day of campaigning, and hardly any of you are registered to vote. You can't hide from me any more. I got the official registration list, and it's pretty sad. You folks need to rock the vote. If I need to get Sean "Puffy" In and his "Vote Or Die" team to personally come to your house and force you to register, well, let's just say it remains an option.
I was planning to talk about the Sadies meeting held today at lunch by the freshmen (that's us) and sophomore Inner Councils. Unfortunately, I had to retake a math test due to my illness a week or so back. So, sucks for me.
However, I've been talking to the sophomores all the rest of the week, and, between the both of our cabinets, we've come up with some pretty crazy ideas that should set this Sadies apart from other dances. Let's just say that, at this point, Nerf guns are involved. You're not going to find Nerf guns at Winter Formal.
I feel some of the momentum of my campaign is slipping away, so I'm coming back on Monday, guns a-blazin', with new necklaces/badges/lanyards/thingies for everyone, and aggressively campaigning. Speeches are on Wednesday (so is the last chance to register), voting is on Thursday, results are on Friday. Saturday lacks plans because Saturday is a total slacker.
And I shall ensure harsh words are exchanged with certain ASB members in honor of the people who actually attempted to register, but couldn't find registrars in the quad. Don't let anybody say I don't fight for the people.

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: Alright, so, the weekend is upon us. Time to rent some old movies! Well, you probably won't do that, but, just in case you do, I have recommendations for every genre. Science fiction? Alien. Drama? The Godfather. Horror? Actually, also Alien. Comedy? Airplane. Romance? Go away, I've given you six hours of viewing pleasure. I can't stand romances anyway.

The Campaign - Day Four

Howdy gang! Will Stabile, here, reminding you that you don't actually need a Blogger account to post comments. Just type away. And, yes, I do check them, so if someone posts something less-than-cool, I can get rid of that. So try to keep your comments appropriate.
Now, that doesn't mean you can't post things about the other candidates, or myself, just keep it within reason. Posting "Candidate A roxors my soxors! Will can never hope to compete with such a soxor-roxing candidate!" is, believe it or not, fine by me. However, when we branch into the innuendo of the less-polite manner, then problems arise. This site is viewed by people with greater power than you or I, and they can shut this place down with a finger-snap if certain posters aren't careful.
But getting back to the campaign. In all honesty, not much happened today. Talked to a few people, shook some hands, kissed some babies, general candidatous stuff. So I won't bore you with the details.
And remember to register to vote, people. You walk over, say your name, get free candy. It's just that easy. And for all those people who never actually got their candy, words will be exchanged and candy shall be given to the righteous. And there will be much rejoicing.

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: This was going to be the hint about the tastiness of Spam. If you just eat it plain, it has a rather distinctive funk about it. But if you pan-fry that until it's crispy on the outside, and smack that on a bun, you've got a delicious Spam hamburger. A Spamburger, if you will.
By the way, no one is really sure what "Spam" stands for. The Hormel Corporation has given "Shoulder of Pork And Ham", "Spiced Ham", "Spiced Pork And Ham", and "Spare Ham" as official definitions. Things like "Synthetically Produced Artificial Meat", "Some Parts Are Meat", "Specially Processed American Meat", "Someone's Pigs Are Missing", "Stuff Posing As Meat", or "Spare Parts and Animal Mucus" are not real.

The Campaign - Day Three

Hey! Will Stabile here, reminding you that, if you've come to visit us, please leave a comment. Poor Elias is getting lonely down there. You don't need a Blogger account or anything. Yeah, I probably should have made this a Myspace or something.
Anyway, today was also the ASB Cabinet speeches, and, while my mind was somewhat elsewhere (damn Gatsby journals!) I also tried to concentrate on our future cabinet. You know, sometimes some people don't really appreciate all the work the ASB puts in to making these things seamless. Getting the balloons, making the little "time's up!" signs for the candidates, setting up sound equipment for the mikes and (unfortunately) background music for more than one contender, stuff like that.
Okay, I get messing around when you're running unopposed. Sheel "Choksizzler" didn't really have a speech, but he also had no opponents, so I forgive him. Sharon "Robim Hood" had no opponents, and showed willingness to dress up as Robin Hood for no discernable reason, so cool on her. Luke wore a little Luigi suit and stomped on "Abstention", and kept it short and sweet enough that I was vaguely interested in voting for him, even though I know he's sort of the only choice. And it was nice how he tied in to Jackie's "Ninchendo" Secretary thing. Whatever. They're going to win. No one will oppose them.
But when you actually have opponents, I really think it's time to drop the cutesy stuff and get down to brass tacks. I would have figure some cutesyness for the "Dances and Assemblies" race, because, you know, they have to be cutesy to put on dances and assemblies. But full costumes and dance numbers for President and Vice President? I think everybody from Sean "Puffy" In on had a singalong (that's four candidates! Four!), and Janice Joo had audience-participation "Joogling".
Guys, I get pandering to the seventh-graders and whatnot. But seriously, we go to Whitney, we're not stupid, we can figure out who to vote for without musical accompaniment. Just tell us where you stand and we'll figure it out from there.
I plan on no dancing during my Class Officer speech. Just warning you guys, figure I wouldn't insult your intelligence by doing something overly silly like that. The other candidates, they can do what they want in the dancing arena.

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: I was going to put something about the tastiness of Spam, but I'll save that one. Instead, watch The Colbert Report Monday through Thursday at 11:30 in the PM on Comedy Central, right after The Daily Show, which does a better job of reporting the news than any "Channel One" nonsense. Colbert is the source of the word "truthiness", which you may have heard me talk about, and is also the visual inspiration for my campaign. Watch the intro, then go look at one of my posters. You'll get it. And, don't worry, the one-hour Daily Show/Colbert Report block runs most times of the day on Comedy Central. Try 8:00 PM.

The Campaign - Day Two

Howdy everyfolks! Well, it's day two of the campaign trail, and, due to my sickness, basically the first day of campaigning for me. You probably spotted me wandering the halls before school, due to nobody having told me today was a Late Start Day. Now, I'm not blaming anybody here, but I'd figure it would at least come up in casual conversation. Anyway, I'm sure you've all heard my stump speech, so I'm not going to repeat it here.
Second, we're out of necklaces/badges/lanyards/thingies. Hopefully the next shipment will come in soon. I know how much you love those things.
Third, we had yet another Inner Council Meeting. Fortunately, the awkwardness of having several candidates for several positions present was somewhat muted today, so hopefully this will be a good, clean campaign on all sides. Sadies is shaping up to be pretty derned fancy, and I wholly recommend your attendance. In costume, maybe even? (It's a superhero theme).
We have a pretty efficient Inner Council this year, and, with your vote, we can build on our existing standbys and throw in some new ideas, maybe tighten the Council up (as of now, it's a little large).
Remember that every vote counts. When I won last year, it only took 2 votes to save me from runoffs and near-certain doom. If you haven't registered to vote yet, well, why the hecks not? You get delicious free candy, you give them your name, and you get the opportunity to vote for a bunch of people. Win-win!
I'll see you tomorrow, hopefully. Try to leave a comment or something!

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: Go see "Snakes On A Plane" in August. Best. Movie. Ever. Hypothetically. There's snakes. There's planes. There's Samuel L. Jackson.

The Campaign - Day One

Howdy everyfolks! Will Stabile here, with the first update from the campaign trail.
You may even have seen me first thing this morning, and gotten one of my necklaces (lanyards? badges? let's just call them "thingies") from either me or one of our helpful "Stabile For '09 President" campaign supporters. Unfortunately, if you were looking for me today after 2nd Period Biology, I have been quarantined back to my house due to various disease symptoms I'd rather not inform you about.
However, please feel free to contact me by telephone (my home phone is available on request), or you can leave a comment here. And there's always email (hint - my signature on all these posts is an email link), but that's much more sporadic, and I probably won't answer you in as timely a fashion as if you had just left a comment here.
And look for my posters up on the walls! I put them up Sunday around 6:00 PM with several of the other candidates and my posse. There's:
- A poster on the corner of the South Hall, by the South Entrance. - A poster above Mrs. Improta's door in the Student Store Hall.
- A banner in the West Hall, between Castro & Rosenberg.
- A poster in the North Hall, above Castro's window.
- A banner in the East Hall, opposite the Class Walls.
Please don't desecrate the posters and banners. It's a felony. Probably. If you must, I guess you can desecrate the necklaces/lanyards/badges/"thingies". And I in no way support the desecration of other candidates' campaign materials. So don't do that.
With any luck and antibiotics, I should be back on the trail tomorrow. So keep on truckin', ladies and Germanfolks!

Today's Helpful Hint From Will: Don't ask for Will to share any of his food. He's sick. If you're nice to him when he gets better, he can look into getting some Girl Scout Cookies for you. If he likes you.
